A little bit of history...
St Columba’s Nursing Home is not just a state of the art care
facility; it is also of major Historical Importance. The demesne
comprises a medieval Castle (Cloughballymore Castle) and Georgian
mansion as well as a walled orchard and Large Grotto.
The
Castle was the main residence of the Kilkelly family and dates back
to the mid 1500’s. The Kilkelly family derived their descent from
Guaire, the seventh-centaury King of Connacht.
The
castle is still intact overlooking the Main Nursing home building.
The Main Mansion building was built by Marcus Lynch from Barna, in
the 1700’s. This was also the birth place of the Richard Kirwin in
1733. Richard Kirwin was an internationally famous scientist in his
day and was elected President of the Royal Irish Academy and also
elected president of the Royal Dublin Society.
We
have lovingly restored this building to its former grandeur and
invite you to come and see this for yourselves
